George Baran
Executive Chair

George has over 30 years of experience in the medical device industry. His responsibilities have included both business and technical leadership in the acquisition and development of novel medical device technologies... 

George has been responsible for the pre-clinical marketing of new drug delivery technologies to medical opinion leaders and major pharmaceutical companies. This has included collaboration with business and clinical partners in the design and co-ordination of pre-clinical studies.

George has been granted several US and international patents for medical devices for drug delivery and minimally invasive surgery.  He holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University, London (ON) where he currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management. George serves as Executive Chairman of the Trudell Medical Limited Board of Directors.

In addition to his role at Trudell, George is a Director of Vanrx Pharmasystems Inc., Sensory Technologies, Mozzaz Corporation, and Sky Medical Technology Inc. He is also founder and President of Perfuse Medtec Inc. a Canadian medical device market development company.

Gerald Slemko
CEO, Director

Gerald is currently CEO and a Director of Trudell Medical Limited. 

Gerald is an Ivey HBA graduate, Western University, London (ON) and began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). After obtaining his CA, he left to pursue entrepreneurial ambitions. He acquired a small company and built it into the largest provider of private label roadside assistance in Canada and brought nurse-based telehealth to Ontario.  

Gerald was also a founding partner and Chair of Technology Investment Management Corporation, which managed a venture capital fund. He was formerly President and CEO of Cuddy International Corporation, an international poultry company. He is currently on the Board of several companies including Ellis Don Corporation where he is Deputy Chair.  

Gerald also has a strong record of community involvement. He is Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the London Economic Development Corporation, formerly President of the Grand Theatre Foundation as well as the Boys & Girls Club Foundation, and past member of the board of Operation Walk Canada, The London Club and Huron University. He is currently on the board of Ontario Global 100; an organization focused on building international capacity for Ontario companies.

Joaquim Balles
Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel

Joaquim is EVP, Corporate Development and General Counsel of Trudell Medical Limited. He has over 25 years of global medtech experience with a proven track record in innovation, IP strategy, strategic business alliances, M&A, negotiation of complex international transactions, dispute resolution, and overall management of the legal and BD functions...

Joaquim joined Trudell in 1996 as its Director of Legal Affairs and has been part of Trudell’s growth trajectory from 250 employees in 1996 to today’s close to 1,600 employees. Joaquim joined the Trudell Board in August 2018.

Prior to joining Trudell, Joaquim practiced corporate, commercial and IP law at a leading law firm in London (ON) and worked as a business research analyst and money market manager at a leading insurance company in Helsinki, Finland.

Joaquim is committed to community leadership, having served on multiple governing bodies, including as Chair of Board of Directors of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and as Co-Chair of City of London’s Newcomer Strategy. 

He is also a member of several professional associations, including the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Joaquim holds a B.Com. International Business Major (with distinction) from Concordia University, Montreal (PQ), a law degree (J.D.) from Queen’s University, Kingston (ON), an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University, London (ON), and a D.E.C. in Pure and Applied Sciences. In addition to English, he is also fluent in French, Spanish, and Catalan.

Melissa Fallowfield
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Melissa is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Trudell Medical Limited providing financial strategic leadership, collaborating with operating companies to drive results and contribute to Trudell Medical Group's growth and success.

Melissa has been instrumental in shaping Trudell's financial strategy, providing critical insights into trends and opportunities, and leading change through corporate restructuring and digital transformation. Her value-based leadership style focuses on building high-performing teams and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Prior to joining Trudell in 2010, Melissa held various progressive roles at ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. and BDO Canada with exposure to clients across many industries including agriculture, manufacturing, insurance, professional services, and investments.  This diversity resulted in broad experience in financial and tax planning, acquisitions, corporate restructuring, and initial public offering activities. 


Melissa earned an accounting degree (BAcc Co-op) with first class honours from Brock University, holds a Chartered Professional Accountants [CPA, CA] designation, is a tax specialist having completed the CPA In-Depth Tax Programs early in her career and maintains membership in the Tax Executives Institute organization.

Jim Alexander
VP, Investments

Jim leads the investment management group with the Trudell Group of companies. He is responsible for managing the investment portfolios of Trudell Medical Limited and the Mitchell & Kathryn Baran Family Foundation..

Prior to his promotion to VP, Jim had worked closely with founder Mitch Baran over a 12-year period as Director of Investments. Jim started his career at Trudell as Director of Tax and Treasury in 2001, a new operational position he was instrumental in creating, following a one-year contract in Accounting and Finance. Jim Chairs the Trudell Medical Limited Pension Committee.

Aside from being a CFA Charter holder, Jim is a CPA and worked previously as an auditor at KPMG in Toronto (ON) and tax manager at EY & TD in London. Jim holds a BBA degree (Co-op) from Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo (ON).

Jim has served on the Board of Children’s Health Foundation (CHF) as Treasurer and was nominated Honorary Director of the Foundation. He was past Chair of the CHF Investment Committee. Jim previously served on the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Resource Planning Committee and chaired their Investment Committee.  His most recent volunteer work has been with the London Community Foundation where he served on the Grants and Donor Development Committees, and was nominated to the Board in 2021, and to Board Chair for a 2-year term 2024/2025. Jim remains on the Board as Past Chair.

Jim is an avid competitive tennis player and co-captains the Canadian Gordon Trophy Senior Tennis Team, an annual international competition between Canada and the US dating back to 1949.

Debbie Uniac
VP Organizational Effectiveness

Debbie Uniac is Vice President, Organizational Effectiveness at Trudell Medical Limited. She is responsible for operationalizing the organization’s values and culture, stewarding the enterprise strategy development process, overseeing corporate communications, and championing Trudell’s sustainability strategy. Debbie also serves as a resource to leaders across the enterprise in organizational change and cross-company collaboration. 

Debbie joined the Trudell organization in 2007 as Director HR at Trudell Medical International and has supported Trudell’s growth and evolution for more than 18 years. She moved to the corporate entity in 2019 and was promoted to Vice President in 2022. She works to translate business strategy into practical systems and leadership practices that strengthen alignment, execution, and performance.

Earlier in her career, Debbie held progressively responsible HR roles in privately held, Canadian-owned companies in regulated industries, and served as lead company negotiator in collective bargaining.

Debbie is a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach and holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, a post-graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management, and a Bachelor of Education in Adult Education. She has served on the Board of Canadian Adaptive Snowsports (CADS) Ontario and the London Chapter of the Human Resources Professionals Association, where she led as Chapter President, and is a past volunteer and trainer with the Canadian Red Cross.

Sharman Crockett
VP Human Resources

Sharman Crockett serves as Vice President of Human Resources at Trudell Medical Limited, where she is passionate about building a positive, high-performing workplace culture. Since joining Trudell in 2011, Sharman has helped shape the organization’s approach to people and culture development, through understanding of human dynamics combined with data-driven strategies to achieve measurable results.

Sharman’s leadership is built on expertise across legal compliance, HR operations, global privacy, and talent development. Her prior experience in legal services and contract management provides her with a unique ability to navigate the intersection of compliance, strategy, and people management, making her a key partner to leaders across the organization.

Prior to joining Trudell, Sharman gained extensive experience in legal services and contract administration at organizations including Sandvine and ATS Automation. Her broad background in human resources, legal compliance, and privacy leadership positions her as a trusted advisor to the executive team and a champion for innovation in people and culture practices.

Seamus Blackmore
VP & Chief Technology Officer, Information Technology

As the Trudell Medical Group’s first Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Seamus is responsible for directing the development of corporate and individual Operating Company AI strategies and assist in managing the implementation of these strategies.

Since joining Trudell in 2024, Seamus has scaled an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Team based in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The team, which has taken on the nickname “Team YYT” – after the St. John’s airport code, is comprised of AI Engineers and Enablement Specialists.

Prior to joining Trudell Medical Limited, Seamus was with KPMG as a national leader within the KPMG Emerging technology practice, a member of the firm’s Digital Executive Team and the AI Steering Committee. He was a member of Microsoft’s AI Partners board where he led a team that focused on the application of emerging technology (AI, Quantum Computing, AR/VR, Predictive Analytics) to solve real world industry problems, primarily in healthcare. Before his time at KPMG, he was national Chief Architect of the Assets and Solutions team for Deloitte.

His career started with a large pharma company, before moving on to founding several start-ups as an entrepreneur.  

Seamus is a family man (husband to his wonderful wife Ann and father of two - Rory and Grace). For fun Seamus can be found sailing, skiing or losing all his money at the World Series of Poker.

Joe Stephenson
VP, Information Technology

Joe Stephenson is Vice President, Information Technology providing strategic IT leadership working with the Operating Companies to support all IT functions including security, networking, application management and development, project management, and special projects.  

Joe began his IT career 40 years ago at Cuddy Farms Limited in Strathroy, Ontario, developing flock management software and building the infrastructure for the first Cuddy network. After several years as a Data Analyst for the Federal and Provincial governments, Joe landed at the Corporation of the City of London where he progressed through several IT roles.

Joe joined Trudell Medical Limited in 2001 as the webmaster responsible for bringing web site development in-house. Working closely with Mitch Baran and Martin Foley he created Trudell Animal Health’s first eCommerce platform that showcased Trudell’s cutting-edge expertise in online retail sales.

Over the course of his 25 years with Trudell Medical Limited Joe’s focus has been on Project Management, Managed Application Development for Custom Solutions and as Director and then VP, Information Technology has grown highly successful teams with a focus on improving the Trudell Medical Group’s overall IT function while supporting significant organizational growth.
